The Dice Man

Published on 14/7/06 in Sports

Woke up in a cold sweat again last night, my minds working overtime.

You see, my partner and I play Yhatzee every day at five o'clock.  It's a dice game that originated in provincial China.  The aim is to roll various combinations of dice in order to score highly, the most sought after throw being a 'Yhatzee', a rare 6 of a kind throw.  Yes, that's right,  'Joe' and I play a rare Scandinavian variation that uses six dice instead of the usual five.

'Joe'.  I think that's his name.  He rarely speaks, he just likes to play.  I don't really know much about him, I know that he spent some time in China a few years ago.  Maybe that would explain it.

Thing is, Joe is starting to win a little too often.  It started as a small lead, y'know, only a couple of games in it, good incentive for me to roll premium hands.  But the last few days (I dunno, maybe I'm getting paranoid) 'Joe' is starting to pull off.  Oh you betcha, I'm really eating his dust.  This odd young man is rolling the ol' bones like nothing I've ever seen.  He can turn an average toss (2,4,2,5,1,1) into a powerhouse rack of bones like 1,2,3,4,5,6 (a large straight!) with only a flick of his skinny wrist.

Is it possible that 'Joe' is cheating?  Something's on his mind.  Last night as I left his damp bedsit he made a strange noise, almost like a cat.  It was like he wanted me to stay with him a while.  But I didn't, I went home a made a pizza from scratch.

I dunno, we'll see, I guess.
