Her innocent outward appearance and sing-song delivery is in direct contrast to much of her comic material, in which she deals with topical humor/satire, mild or serious societal taboos, and controversial topics such as racism, sexism, antisemitism, abortion, religion, marriage, divorce, rape, death, AIDS, disease, jokes on disability, scatology, child abuse, female reproduction (birth control, pregnancy and menopause), on politics, socioeconomic class, and morality.
Sarah recently gave an interview on the Adam Carolla Show promoting her new show on Comedy Central. The cast was lavishing praise on her and touting her as "The female Bill Hicks." What a load of shit. Sarah Silverman is a talentless hack. She is not funny. She seems nice enough and I'm sure she's a decent person, but she's not funny or clever. I know Adam's relationship with Jimmy Kimmel may have been the accelerant, but I have another theory:

She's hot.

That's it. No one expects hot girls to be funny, so when she makes a fart joke or says something dirty, everyone giggles. Its the same reason Jenny McCarthy was considered controversial for sitting on the toilet in the Candies advertisement. Swap her out for Sarah Vowell (who is funny) and the controversy is over. No one cares except people that listen to NPR and have a toilet fetish.

Hot chicks being famous for being hot is nothing new, and I am all for celebrating beauty, but let's not let the fact that they're attractive allow us to believe they are funny or witty. They don't need to be funny to get attention, so most of them don't bother developing a sense of humor. This is not to say that hot girls aren't ever funny, but Silverman seems to fall into the same category as Carlos Mencia. They "will say anything and they so crazy!" They not crazy. They not funny. They suck.

I'll have to disagree with you. Half of comedy is the presentation. The shit that Sam Kinison said was only funny because he looked the way he did and screamed it at the top of his lungs. Bill Hicks had the attitude. Bill Cosby makes you want to sit down at his feet and hear a funny story. Sarah Silverman has the presentation and the humor. It's a package, and as a package it's funny. In its separate parts, it's not.

It's like being a critic. The best criticism identifies clear salient points that are almost objective, along with giving a better alternative. The worst criticism is some moron simply saying "It sucks because I say so." Written on 16/2/07

I agree that presentation is the most important part of comedy, especially stand-up (which I like the think is about the purest form), but her presentation is only shocking because she is an innocent looking girl who doesen't look like she would say the things she does. She's a one trick pony.

Do you remember Dat Phan from Last Comic Standing? His jokes were weak, but his presentation was mildly amusing so he got laughs. Everything was about his mother and didn't work without the stereotypical asian accent. When he went on Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, he had to contend with real comics. He was completely shut down and called out because he only had that one joke. Silverman did the same thing but nobody called her out because she's a cute girl. We've all had a loud-mouthed hot chick in our class or office that wasn't funny, but nobody said anything because the girls are intimidated and the guys want to sleep with her.

Again, i'm sure she's a nice person and it's nothing personal, but from the back of the class- that's who Silverman appears to be. Written on 18/2/07

I mostly agree with you. I think Sarah Silverman is sometimes really funny and sometimes really not (e.g. really NOT funny when she's singing her stupid songs). Her stand up is often funny, but her show on Comedy Central is painfully unfunny. She is probably overrated because she's good-looking.

Are you crazy . Sarah Silverman is the least funny person ever. Sometimes comics can pull off being raunchy. She can not. She has no taste. Where would this whore be if she was not sleeping with every jew in holly wood. She we would be working as bomb detonator for the fire department. If I make a comment about a jew which she is it is tasteless. If she makes a comment about black people and calls them the n word she is considered funny. Well she is stupid not funny. She is a racist. She calls Martin Luther King, Martin Loser King. I hope that they don't give her too much publicity cause she could be everywhere. As far as her being hot. Are you kidding. The phrase "one trick pony" summed it up nicely. If she couldn't use the "shock" angle, she'd be as useless as Ned Holness (aka Carlos Mencia, who's ironically enough not mexican) without the racial jokes. Written on 27/2/07
